I've spent 6 years building retention marketing systems, advocacy programs, and customer communities for B2B tech companies, and 14 years in marketing overall.
Across every role, I saw the same pattern: customer growth was treated as an afterthought: reactive campaigns instead of strategic systems. Marketing focused on acquisition. Customer success focused on firefighting. Meanwhile, retention, advocacy, and community sat underfunded and unstructured.
